Creating a Bird-Friendly Home Without Hazards

Bringing a feathered friend into your home is a wonderful experience! Birds add so much joy and personality to a living space. But it's crucial to create an environment that's not only comfortable but also completely safe. This means being aware of potential hazards and taking steps to eliminate them. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your bird lives a long, healthy, and happy life.

Common Household Hazards

Many everyday items can be surprisingly dangerous to birds. Let's start with the obvious: toxic fumes. Aerosol sprays (like air fresheners, cleaning products, and even hairspray) release chemicals that can be fatal to birds. Also, be mindful of strong odors from things like scented candles or heavily fragranced potpourri. Other dangers include:

• Lead Paint: Found in older homes, lead is highly toxic if ingested.
• Copper: Copper can be poisonous, especially if birds chew on copper wiring or decorations.

7. Avoid Teflon Cookware: The fumes released when Teflon cookware overheats are deadly to birds.
